Description

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a hearty, comforting casserole that combines seasoned ground beef, a rich savory gravy, and tender vegetables all baked to perfection. It’s a classic, easy-to-make meal that’s perfect for family dinners or a cozy evening.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen peas
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with the chopped onion and garlic until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. Drain excess fat.
  • Add the flour to the beef mixture and stir until it’s absorbed. Slowly add the beef broth and heavy cream, stirring until the sauce thickens. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • In a separate pot, boil the cubed potatoes in salted water until tender, about 10-12 minutes. Drain and mash the potatoes with butter and a pinch of salt.
  • Spread the beef mixture evenly in a baking dish. Sprinkle the frozen peas on top.
  • Carefully spread the mashed potatoes over the top of the beef mixture, smoothing it out with a spatula.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the dish is bubbling.
  • Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute the peas with other vegetables such as corn or green beans for variety.
  • For extra flavor, add a handful of shredded cheese to the mashed potatoes before baking.
  • This recipe is great for leftovers and can be reheated easily.
