Description

These classic caramel popcorn balls are a nostalgic treat that combines the crunch of popcorn with a rich, buttery caramel coating. Perfect for parties, holidays, or as a sweet snack anytime!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 10 cups popped popcorn (about 1/2 cup unpopped kernels)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Popcorn:

    • Pop the popcorn kernels using your preferred method (stovetop, air popper, or microwave).

    • Remove any unpopped kernels and place the popped popcorn in a large, lightly greased bowl.

  2. Make the Caramel:

    • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.

    • Stir in the brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt.

    • Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly.

    • Once it reaches a boil, let it cook for 4–5 minutes without stirring.

    • Remove from heat and carefully stir in the baking soda and vanilla extract. The mixture will bubble up.

  3. Coat the Popcorn:

    • Pour the hot caramel over the popped popcorn.

    • Gently stir to coat all the popcorn evenly.

  4. Shape the Popcorn Balls:

    • Allow the caramel-coated popcorn to cool slightly until it’s safe to handle.

    • Lightly butter your hands to prevent sticking.

    • Scoop portions of the caramel popcorn and shape them into balls about 2–3 inches in diameter.

    • Place the formed balls on a wax paper-lined baking sheet to cool completely.

Notes

For added flavor, you can mix in nuts, chocolate chips, or candy pieces into the caramel-coated popcorn before shaping into balls.

These caramel popcorn balls can be wrapped in cellophane or plastic wrap for gifting or storage.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
