Description

A true comfort food classic, the Patty Melt combines a perfectly seasoned beef patty, melted cheese, and a flavorful sauce, all sandwiched between buttery, crispy rye bread. This indulgent recipe is perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner, offering a satisfying balance of flavors that will surely hit the spot!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patty Melt

  • 6 slices rye bread
  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

For the Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon real bacon bits
  • 1 teaspoon sweet relish
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar

Instructions

  • Prepare the Patties
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, black pepper, sea salt, and onion powder. Shape the beef mixture into 6 equal-sized patties.
  • Cook the Patties
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Once cooked, set the patties aside.
  • Prepare the Sauce
In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, bacon bits, sweet relish, and white sugar until well combined. Set aside.
  • Assemble the Patty Melts
Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place the bread butter-side down in the skillet and toast until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side.
  • Add Cheese to the Patties
Place one slice of cheddar cheese and one slice of provolone cheese on each patty, allowing the cheese to melt as the bread toasts.
  • Assemble the Sandwiches
Spread the prepared sauce on the non-buttered side of each slice of bread. Place a cheese-topped patty on top of one slice of bread, then top with the second slice, butter-side up.
  • Grill the Patty Melts
Grill the assembled patty melts in the skillet, pressing down slightly, until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Serve
Remove from heat and serve immediately. Cut each sandwich in half and enjoy!

Notes

  • Customizations: You can swap out the cheeses for your favorites, like Swiss or American, if desired.
  • For Extra Flavor: Add sautéed onions to your patty melt for an extra layer of savory goodness.
