Description

Creamy Scalloped Potatoes are a comforting and crowd-pleasing side dish featuring tender, thinly sliced starchy potatoes layered with a rich, velvety cheese sauce. Perfect for cozy dinners or holiday feasts, this recipe offers cheesy, creamy texture and a golden bubbly top with minimal hands-on effort, making it a versatile and easy addition to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 4 to 5 medium Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8-inch thick)

Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk (or cream for richer sauce)
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Wash and peel your chosen Russet potatoes. Slice them thinly and uniformly—about 1/8-inch thick—using a sharp knife or mandoline slicer to ensure even cooking.
  2. Make the Cheese Sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour to create a smooth roux, cooking for about 2 minutes without allowing it to brown. Gradually whisk in the milk, continuing to whisk constantly until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and fold in the shredded cheddar cheese, minced garlic, finely chopped onion, salt, and pepper until smooth and combined.
  3. Layer the Dish: Lightly grease a baking dish. Arrange a layer of potato slices evenly on the bottom, then pour a portion of the cheese sauce over them. Repeat layering potatoes and sauce until all are used, finishing with a layer of cheese sauce on top.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 15 to 20 minutes until the top turns golden brown and bubbles.
  5. Rest and Serve: Allow the scalloped potatoes to rest for 10 to 15 minutes after baking so the sauce can set and flavors meld before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer to ensure uniform potato thickness for even baking and texture.
  • Properly cook the roux (butter and flour) to avoid a grainy sauce.
  • Choose starchy potatoes like Russets for a creamier final dish.
  • Lightly season each potato layer to balance flavors throughout the casserole.
  • Let the casserole rest after baking to thicken and firm up before cutting and serving.
