These easy chewy flapjacks are buttery, golden, and perfectly soft with a delightful chewiness from porridge oats. A classic British treat that’s simple to make, ideal for snacks or packed lunches. Made with just a few pantry staples, they’re irresistibly delicious!
Ingredients

170 grams butter

115 grams soft brown sugar or demerara sugar

55 grams golden syrup

225 grams porridge oats (not jumbo oats)

50 grams plain flour

Pinch of salt
Instructions

Preheat oven to 180°C (conventional).

Grease and line an 8-inch square loose-bottomed baking tin with baking parchment. If unavailable, use a tin of similar size/volume.

Melt butter, sugar, and golden syrup together gently in a large pan until fully melted and combined.

Stir in flour, salt, and oats until all ingredients are coated with the syrup mixture.

Press the mixture evenly and firmly into the prepared tin.

Bake in the center of the oven for 25–30 minutes.

Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before partially slicing into bars.

Once completely cooled, finish slicing into bars.

Store flapjacks in an airtight container, using baking parchment between layers.
Notes
Troubleshooting
Flapjacks falling apart: Often caused by slicing while still warm; also ensure mixture is packed firmly before baking.
Flapjacks too hard: Could be from overheating sugar and syrup; adding flour keeps them soft and chewy.
Cutting flapjacks: Always wait until fully cooled before slicing.
Texture out of oven: Flapjacks will seem soft immediately after baking but firm up as they cool.
