Ingredients
-
6 oz egg noodles
-
1 lb ground beef
-
¼ cup butter
-
¼ cup all-purpose flour
-
1 cup beef broth
-
1¼ cup milk
-
½ tsp garlic powder
-
½ tsp onion powder
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
¾ tsp salt
-
¼ cup sour cream
Instructions
-
Cook the Noodles:
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Cook egg noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside. -
Cook the Beef:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it apart until browned and no pink remains (6–8 minutes). Drain excess fat and set beef aside. -
Make the Roux:
In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Sprinkle in flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to form a smooth roux. -
Create the Sauce:
Slowly whisk in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Cook for 3–4 minutes until the sauce begins to thicken. -
Add Milk:
Gradually add milk while whisking. Continue to stir over medium heat until the sauce thickens and becomes smooth (5–7 minutes). -
Season the Sauce:
Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. -
Combine Everything:
Reduce heat to low. Add cooked beef and noodles to the sauce, stirring gently to combine and heat through. -
Finish with Sour Cream:
Stir in sour cream until fully incorporated. Serve hot and garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
Notes
Make It Mushroomy: Add 1 cup sautéed mushrooms to the sauce for a more traditional stroganoff flavor.
Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat with a splash of broth or milk to restore creaminess.
Swap Proteins: Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option, or try diced steak for a classic version.
Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free noodles or serve over mashed potatoes or rice.
Low-Carb Version: Serve over roasted veggies or cauliflower mash instead of pasta.
