Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Oil for frying
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Warm the milk in a small saucepan over low heat until it reaches about 110°F (43°C).
- Add the sugar and yeast to the warm milk, stir to dissolve, and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the yeast mixture, egg, and vanilla extract to the flour mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.
- Cut out doughnuts using a doughnut cutter or two differently sized biscuit cutters.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 360°F (182°C).
- Fry the doughnuts in batches for about 1 minute on each side, or until golden brown.
- Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
- While still warm, toss the doughnuts in powdered sugar until fully coated.
Notes
- Be sure the milk is not too hot, or it can kill the yeast.
- For extra flavor, you can dip the doughnuts in a glaze made from powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract after frying.
- If you don’t have a doughnut cutter, you can use two round biscuit cutters to create the doughnut shape.
