These traditional Italian Christmas cookies are soft, sweet, and colorful with the addition of rainbow nonpareils. A perfect holiday treat for festive celebrations, they’re easy to make and guaranteed to be a hit with your family and friends!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup rainbow nonpareils (sprinkles)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until well combined.
  • Roll the dough into 1-inch balls, then roll each ball in the rainbow nonpareils to coat.
  • Place the coated dough balls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the cookies are lightly golden around the edges.
  • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • These cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to one week, making them perfect for holiday gift giving.
  • You can substitute the rainbow nonpareils with other types of sprinkles or sugar crystals for a different festive touch.
