Louisiana Dirty Rice

  • Author: Sarah
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

Louisiana Dirty Rice is a flavorful, hearty dish that combines ground beef with aromatic vegetables, spices, and rice. This dish gets its name from the rich, “dirty” color imparted by the spices and is a beloved Southern comfort food. The perfect balance of heat from cayenne pepper and the savory goodness of the beef makes this a satisfying meal for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup white rice
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • Chopped green onions, for garnish

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned and cooked through, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  • Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, celery, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Stir in the paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute to allow the spices to bloom.
  • Add the white rice and chicken broth to the skillet. Stir to combine everything evenly.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
  • Once the rice is cooked, remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork, garnish with chopped green onions, and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can substitute the ground beef with ground pork or sausage for a different flavor profile.
  • For extra flavor, try adding a bit of hot sauce or Worcestershire sauce to the rice before cooking.
  • This dish can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated for later meals.
