Description
Louisiana Dirty Rice is a flavorful, hearty dish that combines ground beef with aromatic vegetables, spices, and rice. This dish gets its name from the rich, “dirty” color imparted by the spices and is a beloved Southern comfort food. The perfect balance of heat from cayenne pepper and the savory goodness of the beef makes this a satisfying meal for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup white rice
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups chicken broth
- Chopped green onions, for garnish
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned and cooked through, breaking it apart as it cooks.
- Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, celery, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute to allow the spices to bloom.
- Add the white rice and chicken broth to the skillet. Stir to combine everything evenly.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
- Once the rice is cooked, remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
- Fluff the rice with a fork, garnish with chopped green onions, and serve hot.
Notes
- You can substitute the ground beef with ground pork or sausage for a different flavor profile.
- For extra flavor, try adding a bit of hot sauce or Worcestershire sauce to the rice before cooking.
- This dish can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated for later meals.
