Ingredients
Scale
For the Cake:
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup Nestlé Toll House semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup boiling water
For the Ganache:
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup Nestlé Toll House semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (optional, for extra shine)
For the Topping:
- 1/2 cup Nestlé Toll House semi-sweet chocolate chips (for garnish)
Instructions
For the Cake:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and brown sugar.
- In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.
- Stir in the 1 cup of chocolate chips.
- Carefully add the boiling water to the batter, mixing gently. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.
- Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
For the Ganache:
- In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it begins to simmer (do not boil).
- Remove from heat and stir in the chocolate chips, allowing them to melt completely. Stir in the butter (if using) for added shine and smoothness.
- Let the ganache cool slightly before using.
To Assemble:
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand.
- Spread a layer of the chocolate ganache over the top of the first cake layer.
- Place the second cake layer on top and pour the remaining ganache over the entire cake, spreading it evenly.
- Sprinkle the 1/2 cup of chocolate chips on top of the ganache for extra chocolatey goodness.
To Serve:
- Let the cake set for a few minutes to allow the ganache to firm up.
- Slice and serve this rich, decadent cake to your guests or enjoy a slice all to yourself!
Notes
- You can add a layer of whipped cream or chocolate mousse between the cake layers for an even richer experience.
- To store, keep the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
- This cake can be made a day ahead and kept in the fridge. Just let it come to room temperature before serving.
