Scale
Main Ingredients
- Frozen puff pastry sheets (thawed according to package instructions, usually about 2 sheets)
- High-quality chocolate (dark, milk, or semi-sweet – about 1 cup of chopped chocolate or chocolate chips)
- 1 beaten egg (for egg wash) mixed with 1 tablespoon water or milk
Optional Ingredients
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Sprinkles or chopped nuts for decoration
Instructions
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: Allow the frozen puff pastry sheets to thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Cut Out Heart Shapes: Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the puff pastry to smooth any creases. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out twice as many hearts as needed to create pairs.
- Add the Chocolate Filling: Place half of the heart-shaped puff pastry pieces on a parchment-lined baking tray. Add a small piece or spoonful of chopped chocolate or chocolate chips in the center of each, taking care not to overfill.
- Top with the Second Heart: Lightly brush the edges of the chocolate-topped hearts with egg wash, then place another heart-shaped piece on top. Press firmly around the edges to seal and optionally crimp edges with a fork for decoration.
- Apply Egg Wash and Bake: Brush the top of each heart with egg wash for a glossy, golden finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack for a few minutes to let the chocolate set slightly. Optionally dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
- Keep puff pastry cold while handling to maintain puff and texture.
- Do not overfill the hearts with chocolate to avoid leaks during baking.
- Apply fresh egg wash before and after filling to ensure sealed edges and a shiny finish.
- Make sure all heart shapes are uniform in size for even baking and appearance.
- Test baking one heart first to ensure correct oven temperature and perfect chocolate melt.
