Ingredients
For the Filling:

1 lb (450g) ground lamb (or beef for Cottage Pie)

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

½ cup beef broth

1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)

For the Mashed Potato Topping:

2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and chopped

½ cup milk or cream

4 tbsp butter

1 egg yolk (optional, for richness)

Instructions

Boil Potatoes:
Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender. Drain and mash with butter, milk, seasoning, and egg yolk (if using). Set aside. -
Brown Meat:
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add lamb and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed. -
Sauté Veggies:
Add onions, carrots, and garlic to the pan. Cook until softened. -
Add Flavor:
Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1–2 minutes. -
Simmer:
Pour in broth and simmer until thickened. Stir in peas and cook for another 2–3 minutes. -
Assemble Pie:
Spread meat mixture in a baking dish. Top with mashed potatoes, spreading evenly and using a fork to create texture. -
Bake:
Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling.
