Description

Sweet & Simple Nutella Puff Pastry Hearts are an irresistibly charming and delicious treat that combines flaky, buttery puff pastry with rich, creamy Nutella filling. Ready in under 30 minutes, these golden, heart-shaped pastries are perfect for breakfast, snacks, or celebrations and can be customized to suit various tastes and dietary needs.

Ingredients

Scale

Basic Ingredients

  • 2 sheets of puff pastry
  • 1/2 cup Nutella (or alternative spread)
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon flour (for dusting)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Thaw the Puff Pastry: Take your puff pastry sheets out of the freezer and leave them to thaw on the counter for about 20-30 minutes until soft but still cool to the touch. This makes them easier to work with and helps preserve that flaky texture.
  2. Preheat Oven and Prepare Workspace: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly dust your clean work surface with flour and lay the thawed pastry sheets flat.
  3. Cut Out Heart Shapes: Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter or sharp knife, cut matching heart shapes from the puff pastry sheets, aiming for even sizes for uniform baking.
  4. Add Nutella Filling: Place a small dollop (about 1 teaspoon) of Nutella in the center of half of the cut-out hearts. Avoid overfilling to prevent leakage.
  5. Seal the Hearts: Place the matching hearts on top of the filled ones and gently press the edges with a fork to seal and create a crimped edge, keeping the filling inside.
  6. Brush with Egg Wash: Lightly beat the egg and brush the tops of the sealed hearts to achieve a glossy, golden finish when baked.
  7. Bake: Arrange the hearts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until puffed up and golden brown. Rotate the tray halfway through to ensure even baking.
  8. Cool and Finish: Let the pastries cool slightly. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar for added sweetness and presentation.

Notes

  • Keep puff pastry cold and handle quickly to retain maximum flakiness.
  • Use only about 1 teaspoon Nutella per heart to prevent filling leakage.
  • Ensure even thickness of pastry for consistent baking results.
  • Use parchment paper on baking sheet for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
  • Rotate baking sheet halfway through baking for even browning.
