With the perfect balance of cocoa and a touch of cream cheese flavor, these brownies bring the classic red velvet cake to a whole new level of decadence. Perfect for any special occasion or when you’re craving a sweet, indulgent dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring (or more for a deeper color)

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 cup buttermilk

  • 1/4 cup cream cheese (softened, for swirl)

  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for cream cheese mixture)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease or line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

  • In a bowl, whisk together melted butter and granulated sugar until smooth.

  • Add in the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  • Mix in the cocoa powder and red food coloring until the batter is vibrant and smooth.

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder, then slowly add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients. Stir until combined.

  • Pour in the buttermilk and mix until smooth and glossy.

  • In a small bowl, whisk together softened cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth.

  • Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and swirl in the cream cheese mixture using a knife or toothpick.

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs.

  • Let the brownies cool completely before cutting into squares and serving.

Notes

  • For an even richer flavor, you can add chocolate chips to the brownie batter.

  • If you prefer a stronger red color, feel free to add more food coloring.

  • You can skip the cream cheese swirl if you prefer a more traditional brownie.

  • These brownies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4-5 days.
