Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • Red food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles or edible decorations for topping

For the Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 34 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
  • If you’re using food coloring, add a few drops of red food coloring and mix until the batter reaches your desired color.
  • Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  • Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
  • Allow the cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack.
  • While the cupcakes cool, make the frosting by beating the butter with powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream. Add food coloring if desired.
  • Once the cupcakes are cool, frost them with the buttercream frosting and add sprinkles or decorations on top.

Notes

  • If you prefer a different frosting flavor, you can use cream cheese frosting or chocolate buttercream.
  • Store leftover cupcakes in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature or 5 days in the fridge.
