This Onion Tart is a savory delight that combines the rich, caramelized flavor of onions with the creamy, melted Gruyere cheese, all atop a golden, flaky puff pastry. A perfect appetizer or light meal, this dish is simple to prepare yet bursting with delicious flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet of pre-made puff pastry
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a large skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are caramelized, about 20 minutes.
  • Roll out the puff pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Spread the caramelized onions on top of the puff pastry, leaving a border around the edges.
  • Sprinkle the grated Gruyere cheese over the onions.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  • Garnish with fresh thyme leaves before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a drizzle of balsamic reduction before serving.
  • This tart is great served warm or at room temperature.
  • You can substitute Gruyere with other cheeses like Parmesan or Brie if preferred.
