Description

Turkish Chicken with Creamy White Sauce is a comforting and flavorful dish featuring tender, juicy boneless chicken thighs cooked in a rich, silky white sauce with aromatic garlic, subtle spices, and a creamy yogurt finish. This balanced and indulgent recipe perfectly blends simple fresh ingredients and Mediterranean herbs to bring an authentic taste of Turkish cuisine to your table, ideal for family dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Seasoning

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • Salt, to taste
  • White pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Creamy White Sauce

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk or 2% milk
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon dried mint or dill
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Additional salt and white pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Season the boneless chicken thighs with salt and white pepper. Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat and add the chicken pieces. Cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes per side. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside while preparing the sauce.
  2. Make the Creamy White Sauce: Reduce the heat to low and add minced garlic to the same skillet. Sauté briefly until fragrant but not browned. Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the butter and garlic, stirring constantly to form a roux. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens and becomes smooth.
  3. Add Yogurt and Herbs: Remove the sauce from heat and let it cool slightly before stirring in plain yogurt, dried mint or dill, and fresh lemon juice. Stir gently to combine, careful not to curdle the yogurt. Adjust salt and white pepper to taste.
  4. Combine and Simmer: Return the browned chicken to the skillet, coating each piece thoroughly with the creamy white sauce. Cover and simmer on low heat for about 5 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  5. Serve: Once the sauce has thickened to your liking and the chicken is infused with flavor, plate the dish. Garnish with fresh herbs, toasted nuts, or as desired, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use bone-in chicken thighs for extra moisture and flavor.
  • Cook the flour properly when making the roux to avoid a raw flour taste.
  • Simmer sauce gently to prevent curdling of the yogurt.
  • Opt for fresh herbs when possible to brighten the flavors.
  • Allow the dish to rest covered off heat for a few minutes before serving to deepen flavors.
